How Family-Centered Trauma Therapy Supports Military Households
Trauma in military families rarely stays contained to one person. A service member returns home changed by what they experienced. A spouse carries the strain of solo parenting through long deployments. Kids absorb the tension, switching schools and saying goodbye to friends with every PCS move. Symptoms show up differently for each person: hypervigilance and emotional distance in the service member, anxiety and resentment in the spouse, acting out or withdrawal in the children. Treating one family member while ignoring the others leaves the cycle intact. Whole-family treatment addresses the system, not one symptom at a time.
New Growth Counseling brings several proven methods to military families. EMDR therapy is a research-backed approach designed to help people recover from trauma and anxiety, and it has strong results with combat-related and deployment-related trauma. For couples strained by reintegration, therapy helps strengthen communication, rebuild trust, and foster deeper intimacy while targeting root issues rather than quick fixes. For the household as a whole, family therapy includes parent-child work for behavior concerns and bonding, teen counseling for stress and identity struggles, and child counseling for emotional well-being and coping skills. The practice also treats generational patterns, since trauma passed down through military families often shapes how the current generation parents and connects.
The logistics work for military schedules. New Growth Counseling operates Monday through Friday from 8 am to 9 pm, with afternoon and evening availability for duty days and training cycles. Sessions happen in person at 3088 Pio Pico Dr., Suite 203 in Carlsbad or online through secure telehealth, which keeps therapy consistent through TDY assignments anywhere in California. The practice is an out-of-network provider and supplies a monthly super bill for direct reimbursement through PPO insurance plans, so check your TRICARE supplement or PPO coverage for out-of-network benefits. Call (760) 494-4394 or schedule a free consultation and an intake specialist will connect your family to the right therapist.
